Department of Public Safety
Dial 9-1-1 for EMERGENCY
Welcome to the Waterville Valley Department of Public Safety
The Waterville Valley Department of Public Safety is a unique, fully integrated public safety agency serving the Town of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Our department provides police, fire, emergency medical services, building inspection, code enforcement, and health officer functions under one unified organization, allowing us to respond efficiently and effectively to the needs of our community.
A Unique Community We Serve
Waterville Valley is a year-round mountain resort community located within the White Mountain National Forest. While our permanent population is small—just a few hundred residents—the town welcomes thousands of visitors during weekends, holidays, and peak tourism seasons.
This dynamic environment shapes everything we do.
From residential neighborhoods and condominium complexes to hotels, businesses, mountain terrain, trail systems, and event venues, our team operates in a setting that combines small-town character with large-scale operational demands. Our proximity to a major ski resort and extensive recreational infrastructure significantly influences our response capabilities and readiness.
Prepared for Every Season
Public safety in Waterville Valley is seasonal, fast-paced, and constantly evolving:
- Winter brings ski-related incidents, cold-weather emergencies, high visitor volume, and large hockey tournaments
- Summer includes hiking and mountain rescues, water emergencies, weddings, and special events
- Year-round, we remain prepared for fire response, medical emergencies, law enforcement needs, code enforcement, and all-hazards incidents
Our team is trained and equipped to respond across all of these environments with professionalism and care.
One Team, Multiple Disciplines
As a fully integrated department, our personnel are cross-trained to serve in multiple roles. This model allows us to provide flexible, efficient, and high-quality service to our community, even as demand changes throughout the year.
Unlike many surrounding communities that maintain separate police and fire departments, Waterville Valley operates under a unified Public Safety model. This approach reduces duplication in staffing, equipment, and administrative overhead, resulting in significant cost savings for taxpayers while maintaining a high level of service.
Our Department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with personnel trained to respond to police, fire, and ambulance calls. This ensures that no matter the emergency, qualified responders are immediately available without delay or reliance on separate agencies.
We operate with a lean, highly capable workforce that values:
Professionalism
Teamwork
Adaptability
Technical excellence
Strong Partnerships
We work closely with neighboring communities, regional partners, state agencies, and federal land managers within the White Mountain National Forest. These partnerships ensure a coordinated and effective response to incidents of any size or complexity.
Our Commitment
The Waterville Valley Department of Public Safety is committed to providing courteous, professional, and reliable service to residents, visitors, and the broader community. Whether responding to an emergency, supporting a community event, or working behind the scenes to ensure safety, our mission remains the same:
To protect life, property, and the unique environment we are privileged to serve
